Prof. Isao Shimokawa (Nagasaki University School of Medicine) began the study of aging at the end of the summer of 1988, when he started his carrier as a postdoc at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. A research group headed by Prof. Masoro and the Prof. Yu focused on the mechanisms underlying the life-extending effect of calorie restriction. Since then he has engaged in the study of aging and calorie restriction. In 1991, He established an experimental colony of aging rats ad mice at Nagasaki University School of Medicine, and has been seeking key genes or molecules, those are medicating the effects of calorie restriction in mammals. He is now appointed as the president of Japan Society of Biomedical Gerontology.
